Hi There! I'm so glad you visited. Here's my first tip for you. If the text on this page is too small, all you have to do is hold down the Control Key on your keyboard and roll the wheel on the back of your mouse. Forward makes things bigger, back towards you makes things smaller. Try it! By the way, this works on almost every web page! Tell your friends! Aunt Brenda
The Church of the Front Porch This is not your Grandma's church! This is where you will find a pinch of my original articles, mixed with a smidge of articles from guest authors, folded into a generous handful of articles that I find inspiring or thoughtful.

Kitchen Tips That Really Work In this section you will find Clean-Up Tips, TimeSavers, Meal Planning, and Herbs!. My first tip is: If you don't have babies crawling around on your floor, it doesn't need to be clean enough to eat from. Stop looking at your floor, and mine!, when you walk around. I'm sure if you look up, there are much more interesting things to see.

Aunt Brenda's Dirtiest Recipes In this section you will find those recipes on the pages that tend to be stuck together in my cookbooks, and those recipe cards that have survived many moves to become yellowed with age, and splattered with any number of things. Enjoy!

Old-Fashioned Homemade Apple Pie Okay, okay. I cheated. I used pre-made packaged pie crusts. But, hey, they showed up, so I HAD to use them! Plus, it made it so much easier to make this delicious pie. Be careful slicing the apples if you're using a mandolin. Those blades are sharp!

Easy Weeknight Chicken Marsala Marsala wine is frequently used in cooking, and is especially prevalent in Italian restaurants in the United States. A typical Marsala sauce, for example, involves reducing the wine almost to a syrup with onions or shallots, then adding mushrooms and herbs. One of the most popular Marsala recipes is Chicken Marsala, in which flour-coated pounded chicken breast halves are braised in a mixture of Marsala, butter, olive oil, mushrooms, and spices.

Lulu's LA Caviar Lulu's at Homeport Marina is one of our favorite hanging out places in Alabama. Lulu's is owned and managed by Lucy Buffett, Jimmy's sister, and has been in operation for many years. Occasionally, Jimmy stops in and gives an impromptu performance. This is one of Lucy's most famous recipes. This makes a large amount, perfect for summer barbecues!

Perfect Mashed Cauliflower This is an adaptation of several recipes I have found for Mashed Cauliflower. The addition of cheddar and Parmesan cheeses takes this dish to another level! Make sure to squeeze out as much of the cooking liquid as you can. The technique featured here will insure that your dish doesn't turn out runny.

Magic Meals These are the meals that are created when there seems to be no food in the house. (pulling a rabbit out of a hat) And when I announce "dinner," and get the inevitable question "what are we having?", I tell them we're having rabbit.

Welcome to Aunt Bytes!

Aunt Brenda

I am called Aunt Brenda by some and Nurse Brenda by others...

I would love to share what I have learned about life with those who need someone to trust for advice on happiness, health and wellness.

I am a professional nurse, mother of 3 grown children, and grandmother of 5 (including triplet girls!). I was a military wife for 13 years, moving my family across the globe, all the while trying to maintain some resemblance of "normal" for my children (and myself). For example, I never really ate very much Mexican food while I was growing up, and as it turns out our first duty station was in Salinas California. I developed quite the appetite for good Mexican food while we were living there. Our very next duty station was Germany, where there was not one Mexican restaurant to be found in the entire country. Who knew?

So, my first true Adventures in Cooking Land started when my cravings for "normal" got the best of me. I also just happened to have  a neighbor from south Texas. She would spend an entire day making the most delicious tamales I've ever eaten. Another one of my neighbors would spend hours in the kitchen making homemade pizza. I always just made what I could in a hurry. I never wanted to be in my kitchen for any length of time. I guess I inherited that from my mom. She liked to cook, but her interests lay more in making pretty cupcakes for parties, not the everyday meal kind of stuff. So, meeting these women really made me re-think my entire approach to the dreaded kitchen.

I admit that I was in a very good position to make this big change. My husband and I had decided in the very beginning of our relationship that I was going to raise our children instead of focusing on any kind of career. So I had all that wonderful time to sharpen my culinary skills, learn how to run a kitchen like a professional, learn how to be an expert meal planner, and all-around Super-Housewife and Mom. (Heloise was my hero and Good Housekeeping was my Bible)

I really did consider myself a professional housewife. I learned from some of the best cleaning women in the areas I lived, while I was cleaning houses for military people who were moving. I learned how to easily remove even the most stubborn dirt and grime (from some of the wierdest places). So right now, being immersed in "family life" again, all those tricks and tips I forgot I knew are rushing back to me. And I can use that knowledge to help you make your home shine with a minimum of effort.

Yes, even while carrying around a colicky baby, or shuffling a carpool schedule, or even those days when you wonder when you will have time to wash your hair again. Yes, you can do it, and I can help. Keep checking back often. I will be sharing more recipes (oh my gosh, I have so many great recipes!), cleaning tips, and some news items I find interesting.

I am also currently working on website development projects with my husband, Bruce Shoop, founder of PlanetWebSite.

My ultimate goal is to help you improve the quality of your life through more efficient living. If you have a question, and you're not sure who to ask, just

Ask Aunt Brenda!

  • How To Oven Dry Fresh Cranberries
Dried cranberries are a delicious snack, as well as a nutritious addition to many recipes.  I love sprinkling them on top of salads and using them in my Thanksgiving stuffing.  What I don’t like is the price and all the sugar. • No More Cloudy Glasses From The Dishwasher
After trying several tips from several websites, in desperation this morning I tried a “Miracle” Eraser sponge (generic brand) and it removed all the film! From other tips, I now add powdered lemonade mix to the 2nd dispenser cup in the dishwasher and will return to using powder dishwasher detergent. When phosphates were removed from [...]
